For me, it's been over 30 years! We met in first grade. We've been through ups and downs, we've gone years without talking - simply because life got in the way. Somehow - no matter how long it had been - we always find our way back to each other.

I had a milestone birthday this year and she flew out to surprise me. It had been 10 years since we last saw each other. People that know me wouldn't usually use the word speechless. I like to talk! Well, I couldn't put together a coherent sentence for about an hour after she walked through my front door.

Since I couldn't fly out for her milestone birthday, I wanted to do something that I hope is equally as special - though not nearly as fun. :) She loves trees, and her favorite story is "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein, so I set out on a mission to design and make a tree quilt. I decided on having a tree for each season.

Art quilts are one of my favorite projects, and this turned out better than I could have hoped when I started. The back is a soft flannel. I added an iron on label that I traced with pigma inks and colored with crayon, then heat set.

The mats keep all the catnip contained, and the kitties roll around (and sometimes into) the mat. A little later and they are happily snoozing, still on the mat. I wish I was making these when Louie was still alive... but there are plenty of lucky cats across the West that are very happy with me and their owners.
I am so excited to give this lap blanket to my nieces for Christmas this year. I LOVE purple, so making this for someone else was hard .... but as they say 'if you love something set it free'. And oh my gosh, it even has bling!

They are both young ladies, but I didn't want to make them something in their age range because I don't want them to grow out of it in a few years. I want it to be a blanket they can cherish forever (as long as they continue to like purple). :)
That was fun and much easier than I thought it would be. I don't know why I was hesitating for so long. There is a mix of stitch in the ditch and free motion quilting. Also - I used continuous binding for the first time on this quilt. The bling is a series of 3 crystals every six inches set on the outer border. The quilt measures 42x42. It's quite a treasure to me - I hope Emily and April love it as much as I do.
I have finished all the blocks!!! I also recently added both borders so now it's ready to sandwich and quilt!

My mission - find a backing. At first I was sure I would do a red flannel. The more thought I put into it, I realized I probably wouldn't be using the blanket a lot. It will come out after Thanksgiving and be more of a decoration with occasional use. I put so much work into I don't want to be washing it repeatedly every season. I've settled on a fabric backing. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to get a matching solid and add some leftover pieces from the top or pick one of the fabrics in the top to be the back. Decisions, decisions!

This will probably take quite a bit of time to quilt. My plan is to stitch in the ditch around each block, then go back and free motion stitch around all the applique. It will be my biggest challenge in machine quilting so far.
Every time I look at a project I can always easily spot the start/end of the binding. A few months ago, I saw a tutorial for continuous binding (no pocket method) and wanted to try it.

I just finished a blanket (pictures coming soon) so I figured this would be a good time to go for broke. I had been dragging my feet on doing the binding because I was a little nervous about messing this up.... but, to my surprise - it's EASY!! It worked perfectly!! I'm so excited and I don't think I'll ever go back to the pocket method again!

I can't find the video I originally saw/used, but this tutorial is really good and will get you started on continuous binding as well!

~ Enjoy ~

p.s. - those little tree quilts are ADORABLE! I want to make some. :)
A dear friend of mine is amazing with needles. She knits and crochets turning out beautiful, wearable art. For her birthday she received a entire set of gorgeous wooden needles. In order to protect them she wanted a case. When she asked me to make it for her I was so honored, and excited to get going on the project.

Renee sent me a few ideas for cases she found online, and gave me some stunning seahorse fabric to use. Having never made one before, I chose a tutorial, made a prototype out of scrap fabric, and jotted down notes on how I would do it different. We met for lunch so she could see it before I cut into the good fabric, and she loved it. YAY!
But, all went well and the finished project turned out beautifully!
Thanks Renee for letting me make this for you, for giving me projects that challenge my skills and knowledge, and for letting me use your photo of the case all filled up. :)
So recently I was making a narrow tie, and needed to turn it right side out. I don't have any wire hangers, so I went in search for something that would fit. I ended up browsing through closets and drawers all over the house and came up with a Q-Tip. Sounds strange, but worked so good! I just pulled the cotton tip off each end... in that regard clean lollipop sticks would work too, but I don't have any of those. Next time you're in a pinch with a sewing project, you just might find what you need in the hall closet!
It's summertime again, and the garden is in full swing.

I don't know if this is technically a Panini, but gosh it's just so fun to say, try it... Zucchini Panini.

Ok, so it's almost embarrassing how simple this is. Split a torta roll (Costco) in half, drizzle with olive oil. Drizzle both sides of the zucchini slices with olive oil, then top with salt and pepper. Place both pieces of the torta roll cut side down on a grill. Lightly brown/toast the bread, remove and put a slice of Havarti on each piece of bread. Grill both sides of the zucchini, place on the bread, put the sandwich on the grill for minute or two to heat through.

What a wonderful seasonal treat. This would make a great pairing with salad or soup. If I had some fresh pesto or a good pepper jelly I might have added one of those.... what would you add?

More and more I find myself trying to come up with homemade gift ideas for birthdays and special occasions. Now that I'm getting more confidence in my sewing skills and willing to try new things, it's a little easier. I have a friend that knits and I really enjoy all the things she has made for me, so I know homemade stuff makes a great gift.

One of the teachers I've supported the last 2 years just had a milestone birthday so I decided to make her a tote bag. What girl doesn't like a good selection of bags?? I used beautiful batik fabrics - they make everything look richer and deeper with their wonderful colors and patterns. I followed a pattern from AllPeopleQuilt.com.

I love having sewing gal pals to bounce ideas off of. Deanna helped me pick the fabric colors, and Dionne and Judi gave me the button closure idea. The pattern doesn't call for a closure so it had to be done after the fact. I made a skinny strip of fabric and since it couldn't be installed between the lining and bag without taking it apart, I tied the ends and put beads on so it would look like a decorative addition. I used 2 different colored beads because of the two tone log cabin. Since I haven't met a girl yet that doesn't like a little bling, I added the jewels along the bottom edge of the blue as well. I think it really finished the bag off and made a big difference in the final outcome.
I have a confession to make: every time I walked by the bag I couldn't help but admire it. It was probably the sparkles... they make everything better!

I was going to put homemade cookies in the bag, but ran out of time to bake them. I put my favorite historical fiction novel in, "Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet". A friend from England said whenever they gift a bag or purse they always put a coin in for good luck. I found one from her birth year and added that too.

Happy Birthday Nicole!
For new readers, or those that don't remember, click here to see the post.

As I've been using the room, I discovered that it would be nice to put some sort of hard floor in. Whenever I try to zoom across the room in my chair, it would flop instead of roll, pins were hard to find, and no matter how often I vacuum, whenever a project touched the floor it would come up with lint, thread or hair on it.

I recently had a milestone birthday and my mom flew in to celebrate. Her gift to me was laminate wood floors. It really stressed me out taking the room apart, but I knew it was all for the greater good. My husband worked so hard on this project. The carpet and pad came out pretty easy, he sanded the floors and away we went.

Voila, the finished product! Dionne and I have already roll tested the floor and it works perfect. I think it totally changes the look of the room and I love it!
At Christmas I considered making my sister's husband a mug rug to go with his bag of coffee. She didn't think he would get much use out of it, but said she would love one for her desk. I told her that one day I would send her a little surprise in the mail. Well, today is that day.

I wanted to make her something that would remind her of the beach while at work so she could take a little mental vacation now and then. This mug rug measures 7.5" x 9.5" and features 2 little beach huts (one for each of us), an umbrella, and a kite.

Hope you like it Carrie! Love you...
I might be on a record here ... two M.M.S. blocks done in one month! Three more blocks to go. I think I could actually finish this by summer! The very bottom strip I cut just slightly too small. I'll have to make up my boo boo in the seam allowance when I piece the blocks together. I really need to practice what I preach: measure twice, check directions twice, cut once.

There are embellishments that go on the snowman, the top present, and their hats after quilting is done. Such fun. :)
I saw a tutorial online for fabric baskets used to stuff with gifts. It gave me an idea to make one I could keep next to the machine for small scraps and thread pieces. I'm one of those sewers that clips my start and end threads after each seam. The outer fabric matches my sewing room curtains, I have to be careful not to make and/or cover everything in sight with it, I love it that much. The inner fabric is a coordinating piece.

I used a heavy duty interfacing so I could ensure it would stand up rigidly... I didn't want the sides collapsing at all. I might use a slightly softer interfacing next time, or mix them with the more rigid one on the sides of the basket and a less rigid at the bottom. I noticed the bottom of my fabric basket bows out just a little from the bulk of the interfacing.
This was a test basket so I went pretty quick and wasn't very careful. I do plan to make more, so I'll do my own tutorial someday when I've got it just the way I want it. But for now ... isn't it cute?!? Thanks to Pam from the Threading My Way blog for posting her tutorial!

We used to use these tray tables in our travel trailer, but now we don't need them in there. My husband has one in our bedroom to put all of his 'stuff' (keys, wallet, phones, etc) and I decided to use the other as an ironing table that I could keep next to me while sewing.

The bottom layer is insul-brite, and that is covered by ironing board fabric. I stapled those layers on the underside. All the tutorials show stapling the cover fabric as well, but I wanted it to be removable for washing (or changing my mind on fabric colors). I cut a rectangle, and stitched a pocket all the way around. Originally I wanted elastic, but didn't make it quite big enough for that. I found some kitchen twine and put that into my pocket as a drawstring and it worked like a charm. I got a mini iron perfect for the tray table and use it to press seams as I go.

There aren't photos step by step on this one, but my husband wants a cover for his table so I'll do tutorial photos with that one.

Finally finished block 5 of the Merry Merry Snowman quilt. Four more to. At this pace I might actually finish it before Christmas!

I've decided there's a little more hand stitching than I enjoy doing ... but I'm loving all the applique designs. The most recent item they needed was rice bag covers. They put rice in IV bags, and warm those up when heat applications are needed (genious!). They wanted covers that would be thick enough so the animal wouldn't get too much heat, but thin enough that the warmth would transfer through.

I was on a mission. First I needed to find the right combination of fabrics, then I had to learn the best way to make the bag. I hadn't ever made a bag before, so this was new territory for me. My first try was fleece, but then I thought of all the times I'd worn that on a breezy day and the cold came right through. Next idea was flannel, but that's too thin. Then I started thinking about sweatshirt fleece with a cotton novelty, and after a quick conversation with Dionne, she agreed.

I brought a test bag by the hospital, and we put a warmed rice bag in. They insulate very well so there isn't a risk of burning the animal, they hold that heat nicely, and they are soft and cushioney. I made these so there aren't any exposed seams. Technically they are reversible, but the velcro tab closure is only on the fleece. The velcro keeps the bag from falling out, also eliminating the risk of burning an animal.

In the end I learned a few new things, helped the vet make their patients more comfortable, and had fun doing it!
I posted this image on a quilting forum and they deleted it because it was vulgar. Go figure.

A little history... I met Peggy through my friend Judi. Peggy is Judi's best friend and as a reader of the blog you might remember Judi is a dear friend of mine, and the one that got me into quilting. Over the holidays I saw a tote bag Peggy made that I absolutely loved. I got the pattern but by the time I got around to using it the holidays were over.

I had some fabric of cats playing in a basket with balls of yarn; when I found it I knew I was going to use it for my friend Renee who has two grey tabby cats and she knits. In fact, she is the best darn knitter I know. She makes amazing, beautiful stuff! I decided to make that fabric into the Crabapple Hill tote bag and change the Christmas center into a panel that goes with it.

I found some clip art, added the text, and traced it onto my center panel fabric. From there I colored the picture with Crayola Crayons, heat set the color, then hand stitched along my tracing lines and made the bag. My husband, who is incredibly clever, came up with the phrase on the bag since I was struggling with something funny to put on there. I finished it off with Swarovski crystals for the eyes, nose, and to dot the I's.
It was sudden, shocking, and so very sad. Brian was an amazing man, loved by so many people. For his services they needed to use the high school gym and hundreds of people attended. He was the office manager, and while at work he suffered a brain aneurism while talking with one of the secretaries. She has sinced moved into his job and office. I can't even begin to understand what a difficult decision it was for her. I know when I walk down the hall I'm still adjusting from expecting to see his smiling face. I wanted to do something for Tracy to help her personalize the space and celebrate her promotion.
I didn't have any specific ideas, but it wasn't this. I'm so happy with the end result and I hope she will be to. I just love the creative process, even if I still don't fully understand it. :)
It's a 12" x 12" muslin center, a 1" (finished) inner border with corner stones, and a 3" (finished) outer border. The flowers and vase are appliqued on, I added a strip on the vase and attached heart button embellishments. I embellished the flower petals with crayon to add some color and placed a swarovski crystal in the centers.
When I attached the binding I added a strip of ribbon for hanging. When I held it up, the small quilt would bow a little ... but once hung against a wall it laid flat and proper. Daryl suggested I add a zip tie inside the binding just where the ribbon is to give it a little rigidity just to be sure it wouldn't go wonky at some point. Worked like a charm!
The Merry Merry Snowman quilt should be done by now, but my new goal is to have it ready for Christmas 2013. I recently finished blocks 3 and 4. It's a lot of work, but so much fun. Since I'm partway done with block 5 (out of 9), technically I'm half finished making the top. :)
The first time I had a Pasta Fagioli soup was at Olive Garden a looooonnnnggg time ago. Later Daryl found a recipe online claiming to be O.G.'s but it doesn't taste the same. It does however, taste wonderful! I actually prefer this one over the restaurant's. You'll notice it has a jar of spaghetti sauce. I thought it was weird when I first made the soup, but it just works. I think I've mentioned in previous posts that I don't like a brothy soup -- I like it chunky and hearty -- so here's my version of the recipe I found online years ago:

1.25 lbs ground beef

1 Tbl olive oil

1 med-large onion, diced

3-5 carrots, chopped

3 ribs celery, chopped

2 cans diced tomato

2 cans kidney beans, drained and rinsed

44 oz beef stock or broth

1.5 tsp dried basil (or italian seasoning)

1.25 tsp pepper

2 teaspoons dried parsley

24 oz jar spaghetti sauce

a few shakes of hot sauce

elbow or shell pasta

Brown ground beef in a skillet. In 6+ qt dutch oven/stockpot add oil, onion, celery and carrot. Cook about 5-10 minutes. When ground beef is done browning, drain fat and add beef to vegetable mixture. Add tomato, beans, stock. seasonings, pasta sauce, and hot sauce. Bring to boiling, then simmer for about 45 minutes. In a separate pot, cook pasta according to package directions. Serve soup over pasta.

I started sewing about 3 years ago. My neighbor Crystal wanted to make aprons and I said I was all in to help. We had such fun picking out fabrics and patterns, but my only experience with sewing was helping my mom makes clothes when I was a kid. She taught me all the basics and eventually I bought a starter machine to learn with.

My first purchase was a basic Singer and the tension wasn't working right so I took it back (in hindsight it probably just needed adjusting). Then I bought a Brother from Costco for $130. All of the sewing items on this blog were made with that machine. It's carried me quite far and I've learned so much since I started. But, alas, it's time to upgrade. Now that I've found my niche I just need more room to work. The 4.5" throat (or opening from the needle right), was too small for many quilting projects. Daryl can attest to lots of cuss words eminating from my sewing room. That being said, the Brother is a great little workhorse piecing machine.

I've been saving money for a little while to purchase a new machine. I bounced around between Husqvarna, Janome, Pfaff and finally settled on the Elna eXcellence 740. She has a huge throat space, lots of stitches and came with all the feet and accessories I will need for quilting. She sews smooth, takes thick fabric in layers really well and she purrs when she runs.

This year for Christmas we decided to visit my Mom in Arizona for some sun and warmth over Christmas. Since we have 2 dogs, and boarding costs more than the airline tickets, we chose to drive. Mom pulled off a huge Christmas surprise... the sewing machine I'd been saving for. Holy cow! I'm humbled by her generosity. Daryl was a big help in keeping me from buying the machine when my salesperson called with a sale, and I'm told he did so much research he now knows more about sewing machines than he ever wanted to. I'm excited to do more sewing! Now a new learning curve begins! Here's a picture of the two machines together.... Little Brother has a big sister, and her name is Shelby. :)
They are larger than a coaster to accomodate your beverage and a snack. The other benefit is you get more design space. :) As a Christmas gift this year for a few friends and teachers I work with, I customized these to their likes. They all vary in size depending on the design I went with. I had a blast with a wonky cut batik, half dresden in batik, seahorses in batik, and Washington Huskies.

The seahorses, WA Huskies, and half dresden were done with applique. On the wonky cut I quilted in 2 flowers, one facing up and the other down so it's technically right side up no matter which way it's turned. For the seahorses, I did a doodle all over quilting. On the half dresden and WA Husky rugs I quilted by just tracing the object.
Because I have to ship their presents, we usually go with gift cards at Christmas. I didn't want to do that this year. My friend Dionne found a great pattern for reversible hooded scarves and I knew that's what I wanted to make them.

Since I usually quilt, making wearable objects isn't my strength. In order to make sure I could do them well, I did a test one first. For the test one I used sweatshirt fleece and a plaid cotton knit. For the girls, they live in a cold climate, so I used sweatshirt fleece and flannel. The flannel was available in more colors and prints than the plaid. I think I found materials that suit their likes. The knit was actually easier to work with than the flannel because it didn't stretch as much.
This is one of the reasons I make a test product before doing the real thing, especially when it's for someone else. For the girls' scarves I did an accent strip and topstitch and was much happier with the way it looked.
We stopped at quilt shops and had lunch at Hurricane Ridge. One of the shops we stopped at had an adorable panel called Curiosities made into a quilt and displayed. My brother and sister in law were pregnant at the time and they were not finding out the sex. I bought the panel hoping the little one would be a girl. The shop owner let me take pictures of it to remind myself what it looked like.

Lucky for me, they did have a girl! I set to work right away on this quilt to have it ready in time for Christmas. This was my first time using free motion quilting to trace. I was pleased with the results!
On the original blanket the baby name was done in hand embroidery, but I wanted it to stand out more so I appliqued her name using the border and binding fabrics.
